THE JOURNEY IS THE GOAL
50 years ago I went to Charles University to study medicine. Thanks to the then regime, I finished my studies at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Košice and after school I joined research, where I later founded the first gnotobiology laboratory in Central Europe.
Twenty years ago, my colleagues and I organised the world's first international scientific conference on probiotics, the IPC (International Probiotic Conference) in the Tatras, which is still the largest international scientific event of its kind worldwide every year. It brings together the top experts in probiotics research and keeps us in contact with these scientists on a daily basis, discussing, planning research, finding ways forward, solving and exploring.
15 years ago, we published the concept of targeted modulation of the microbiome with targeted probiotics and prebiotics. Since then, this concept has had hundreds of citations worldwide. Thanks to international collaboration, we are now putting this concept into practice and developing products that target specific health problems. We called them iProbio because they are innovative, intelligent and indicated.

"There is growing evidence linking the human microbiome to chronic diseases in which inflammatory processes or inadequate immune system response play an important role in the pathogenesis. These findings extend the role of the microbiome to a group of diagnoses outside the gastrointestinal tract. Allergic disorders such as atopic dermatitis and asthma are common hyperimmune disorders in industrialized countries. Genetic predispositions have been identified as major triggering factors for the development of atopic dermatitis, but current research points to a significant role of the external environment and the gut microbiome. Numerous studies support the association of the importance of hygiene in allergic immune disorders. Inadequate exposure to various microorganisms in early childhood increases susceptibility to allergic diseases. Probiotics provide health benefits through multiple mechanisms of action, including modification of the immune response in lymphoid tissue (GALT). Although many clinical studies in humans and experiments in mice have demonstrated the beneficial effects of probiotics in various immune disorders, this effect is strain-specific and specific probiotics need to be applied for individual allergic diseases. The personalized probiotics approach, which delivers the necessary species of beneficial microbes to the gut based on microbiome analysis, offers a promising opportunity for the treatment or improvement of symptoms also in allergic diseases."

"Our world is now facing a multitude of new infectious diseases. Bacterial infections are being treated with antibiotics, albeit with increasing difficulty. The most common causes of infections have now developed broad-spectrum antimicrobial resistance. However, there is now an even greater challenge from both old and new viruses that are capable of causing respiratory, internal and urogenital infections. Reports of viruses resistant to first-line therapeutic drugs (antibiotics and antivirals) are increasing and there is an urgent need to develop new antiviral agents. It seems almost unbelievable that the antiviral capabilities of probiotics have received so little attention to date. Over the years, probiotic strains of lactic acid bacteria (Lactic Acid Bacteria) have been successfully used to treat gastrointestinal, oral and vaginal infections and some may also act to lower cholesterol levels. Some probiotics prevent intestinal dysbiosis and thus reduce the risk of various infections. Other probiotics have anti-tumour and immunomodulatory properties. Antiviral activities of probiotic bacteria and/or their metabolites have been reported in some studies. The mechanism of the beneficial effects of probiotics in combating viral infections is sometimes unclear. Interestingly, however, a clear decrease in the number of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium spp. cells, which are the source of intestinal probiotics, was observed in patients with COVID-19. Our research is motivated by the need to develop new effective weapons against SARS-CoV-2. It focuses attention on viruses capable of infecting both humans and animals and specifically investigates the potential of probiotic bacteria and their metabolites to interfere with the viral infection process. We also aim to provide a basis for planning future antiviral research on a probiotic basis."
